The Big What? Is a three-day campout and music festival put on by none other than The Big Something, an awesome North Carolina based alternative rock band with a big jazz and funk flavor. This small-ish festival hosted about 2,000 attendees and we had the pleasure of meeting many of these amazing people!
We arrived on Thursday morning to be greeted by smiling and swaggering event staff. Entry was super organized and quick with multiple parking lots for different groups (vendors, band members, RV camping, and general parking), as well as shuttles into the event area. We had a great time waving at campers as they were shuttled into the grounds on trucks and trailers.
The main concert and vending area was located in a big, open field. During the day campers milled between the stage, vending booths, the giant art gallery tent, and food stalls (shout to Bangin’ Pies – Cheesus Crust Saves!). There were also some big sprinklers that kept everyone cool in the sweltering 95+ degree heat (cold refreshments from the ice cream and lemonade stand helped). By the time Friday arrived, many had set up hangout spots near the stage by staking down canopies and settling in chairs. Those who weren’t able to do so tended to come out of their woodsy camping spots just long enough to catch their favorite songs before retreating from the sun’s rays.
When the sun finally made its way across the horizon, the real festivities got started. Hippies emerged from the woods eager for music, live art performances, and delicious food. Did I mention that the music was awesome? The Big Something headlined every night, putting out an eclectic blend of funk, rock, and wavy jam-band melodies. Other artists performed from noon into the late night with just about every genre representing. From 12-string Spanish-inspired guitar solos to metal bands with four-foot dreadlocks, this festival had it all. Check out the shots by Moon Daze Art and Photography below!
We feared that we would be stuck at our booth the whole time – so close to the stage, yet so far. But suddenly – a plan appeared! We tricked out our collapsible wagon with lights, EL wire, and a full assortment of supplies to create the swag wagon:
Festival-goers were stoked at the idea. Most of them simply hadn’t gone out to the vending booths yet, so they weren’t even aware that we had all of the items that they had forgotten to bring. Plus, we got to see live music and visual performances up close with new friends! We really got into the thick of it as we pulled the wagon to the main stage, through woods camping, and even to the secret stage on Friday night.
The Big What? 2016 was a big, awesome, hot, party – and we’ll definitely be back next year. We hope you’ll be there too. Check out the official Big What site to learn more!
